Welcome to How To Set Goals – A Powerful Coaching Exercise.

The key to setting realistic goals is to think bigger picture, yet be realistic at the same time.

So, for example, if you want to own an organic baby food empire but you’re:

  • A single mother.
  • Have three kids under 7.
  • Work in a supermarket part time.

You need to firstly identify the smaller goals that are ultimately going to lead to your big dream.

Once you identify the smaller realistic goals, it’s a case of working on each one, in ascending order until you reach the big one: the dream.

In this post, I’m going to show you how to set goals and achieve them.

Remember, it doesn’t matter where you currently are in your life.

What your circumstances are.

You’re only one step away from changing your life.

Because only YOU can change your life.


Here we go: How To Set Goals – Coaching Exercise.

Step 1: Set The Goal

How to Set Goals

For example, in the case above, the first goal could be to make organic baby food for 5 local cafés whilst maintaining your current job.

Step 2: Identify The Obstacles

List every single obstacle you can think of that is going to get in the way of achieving your goal of making organic food for 5 local cafes.

So, this could be:

  • Time.
  • Money.
  • Child Care.
  • Food safety certificates.
  • Equipment.
  • Space.
  • Selling to the café owners.

Then next to each obstacle write out the solutions.

Don’t be dismissive or negative here.

Be inventive.

If you’re stuck ask someone you trust to brain storm with you (Support Buddy – see below).

Step 3: Support You Will Need

List the support you may need to reach your goal of supplying organic baby food to 5 cafes.

For example:

  • Alarm clock to wake up earlier.
  • Parents / friends / nursery / child minder / after school clubs to look after the kids.
  • Food Standard Agency – advice and direction.
  • Business Mentor to help guide me.
  • Crowd Funding for finance.

Step 4: Action Steps

With the above analysis in mind, identify literally every single step that you need to go through the reach the goal with a timescale next to each.

So, for example the action steps might be:

  • Perfect 5 different recipes – mid September.
  • Give samples to 10 friends with babies to try – end of September.
  • Get feedback – 1st week October.
  • Perfect recipes – 2nd week October.
  • Decide on brand name – mid September.
  • Design logo – mid September.
  • Research packaging – end September.
  • Take food hygiene test – end September.
  • Draw up target of café owners – 2nd week September.

Breaking the goal up into smaller action steps helps bring clarity to the situation and will assist you moving forward.

Step 5: Support Buddy

Identify someone you trust and ask them to be your support buddy through this process.

This can mean as little or as much as you think you need, from a friend or relative all the way through to a Small Business Coach like me.

It may simply mean a phone call every week to update your Support Buddy on your progress OR it may be a more formal arrangement whereby you meet every week and commit to certain action points.

Whatever it may be, this person is there to give you accountability and motivation.

So, pick wisely.

Step 6: Routine

Identify a daily routine that is going to support you in reaching the goals.

Literally map out your days in hourly chunks; how can you split your day to ensure that the action steps are taken?

Step 7: Motivation and Rest

It’s vital that you keep your energy levels and motivational levels up during the goals reaching process.

Be disciplined in looking after yourself, by getting enough rest and spending time doing the things that you know make you feel good and keep you motivated.

Step 8: Start!

Don’t procrastinate, just start. As soon as you begin taking those baby steps towards your goal the sooner you will achieve it!

Once you’ve achieved the first goal it’s time to move forward and work on the next goal and so on until you’ve reached your dream!
